Really surprised that nobody mentioned contact your local government to find out what the law is for this. Most jurisdictions have laws on who is responsible for what. In our neighborhood the association is responsible for plowing the snow on the street and treating the ice that might form. We as homeowners are responsible only for the sidewalks that must be shoveled within 24 hours of the last snowflake falling.
With this said the answer lies to your question within your local laws.

I agree that it's unfair to sue someone who dosnt really have anything to do with you falling and hurting yourelf. How pissed off would you be if someone fell and hurt themselves and said well im going to blame you and get your money because its your drive way im renting.
They can't help the bad weather, you are responsible for your safety outside the apartment, yes they could maybe put some salt down or something, but if you were that worried so could you.

Stop Foreclosure

It depends on the number of apts in the building and the lease. We have five apts with a common driveway but it states the in the lease that the tenants are responsible for the walkways. If someone fell, the landlord would likely be liable for negligence or at least medical bills since the ice is in a common area.

Sell Your Real Estate

Seems abit ridiclous to expect your landlord who probably lives no where near the appartment to come and salt the drive.... its crazy that he could possibly be sued for this! Why dont the tennants chip and and buy a bag of salt and sort it themselves, instead of expecting it to be done for them and them looking to sue someone when they hurt themselves? Is prevention not better than cure?!?!!?

Self Storage Investing

Yes the landlord can be sued for this. Tenants have a right to be safe while they are renting. Where I live a landlord can be fined for not shoveling and salting their properties. I would take pictures because if anyone were to fall and sustain serious injuries, the landlord would be definitely sued. I hope this helps you out.

Yes, the landlord can be sued and it will come under "Slip and Fall" if you want to contact a lawyer about it but you will have to actually fall and get a fracture in order to sue him.

Sell Your Real Estate

It's always possible if someone is hurt in a slip and fall and the ice has not been taken care of in a reaasonble fashion in a reasonable time frame to win damages either from their insurance or in a lawsuit.
